1-History

Selkirk was raised in Montana, where the first known kittens of this type were born in 1987, and it is one of the cats of six found in an animal shelter.

Others had the typical straight coat of a short-haired domestic cat, but the curly-haired female was so unusual that she caught the attention of a local Persian breeder, Jerry Newman, who adopted it.

Jerry crossed it with a black Persian cat called "Photo Finish of DKA". Six cubs resulted from this mating, three of which were curly-haired, which proved that the genetic factor that causes this trait is a dominant factor, unlike the Devon Rex and Cornish Rex strains, which are also curly-haired.

It was called Miss Dipesto, and within a few years, this breed was recognized, by many, cat associations, all over the world, where it gained enormous popularity, despite its small numbers.
It was named after the Selkirk Mountains, in Wyoming, and Rex added to indicate that the coat was curly.
